Memories

1/27/2013

THE OCEAN CALLS-
At age 15 a friend and I took SCUBA diving lessons and began diving in many of the lakes in Colorado.   I remember that we bought the thickest wetsuits and our “Aqua Lung” tanks would only hold about a half hour of air.   My dad would take Kerry and me to the lakes and then when we had emptied our first tank, he would drive into town and get them filled so we could do another dive that day.   Kerry and I would watch “Sea Hunt” and that television series sparked my first real love for the ocean.   Kerry, Dave (another high school friend) and I drove to the California ocean a year later at the age of sixteen.   The first thing we did was go to Newport Beach and go… SCUBA diving.   Two years after that, we both joined the Marine Corp and part of the reason… We got stationed in California.

Patience

PATIENCE  1/19/2013

I know that it has been awhile since I have updated this, but there has not been too much to say.   On my last post, I had made a full price offer to the owner of the Ericson 32.   He would not take any money down, but wanted to talk to his new wife about what he was doing.   After several days, he called me and explained that he had been planning on buying a boat that was just a few slips down from his own.   He had showed his wife the new boat and she didn't like it at all.   He told me that as soon as he found another boat, I could then buy his boat.   His wife and him didn't want to be "between" boats as they did use the boat every week.   I told him that I could be patient and still would like his boat.

I continued looking and found another Ericson 35 that I really liked.   A 35 not only costs a bit more, but is more each month for a slip.   I told the owner I was interested and wanted to see his boat.   He was very happy, but called me within a day or so to say that he needed another week or two before I could even see the boat.   Something with his wife...  I said that I would be patient and decided that I had two boats that I would gladly buy and that I would just wait on the Lord to figure out which direction I would go.   I have been praying that I was in the Lord's will so I decided to just wait.

Today, I attended the Safety At Sea Seminar at Newport Harbor Yacht Club.   What a great day this was for preparing me for doing more sailing offshore.   I am really happy with all my new information and today's class has changed what I was planning for safety equipment.   This class was one of the prerequisites for doing any of the famous races from California to Hawaii.    Patience Don patience.

Herbie 2

1/6/2013-  I talked to Herbie and he told me that he thought he would find another boat within a couple of weeks.   I made contact with a marine surveyor and am arranging for a haul-out and inspection this next week.   With that, I can arrange for insurance and a slip.   It looks like I will keep the boat in Long Beach Marina.  I just found out last night that my good friend Steve has his boat in Long Beach.   Onward and upward.

Herbie 1

1/4/2013-  Herbie called and asked if I could be a bit patient with taking delivery of the boat.  It seems that he and his wife did not buy the boat they were planning on getting.   They do not want to be without a boat during their "looking" for another boat.   They do want me to buy the boat.   I told them, no problem!   I added that I would like them to provide me with a date when I could take possession of the boat.

Do I continue to look at other boats?  Do I just "Turn it all over to the Lord?" and be patient?   It seems like purchasing a boat can be filled with many interruptions and unknowns.   It does give me time to line up a slip, insurance, a haul-out and survey.   These are only a few things that I should do before taking possession.   Maybe this is good.

I think I bought a sailboat today...

1/2/2013

This morning started out pretty cold (by Calif standards) and very windy.   The sky was clear, so with my long johns, sweat-shirt and leather motorcycle jacket, I got on my motorcycle and rode the 100+miles up the coast to Oxnard and Vintage Channel Island Marina.  I met with the boat owner (of a sailboat I had become interested in) who was German American and who was a mechanic by trade.  I believe we hit it off immediately.   The boat is a 1975 Ericson 32-2.  We Germans tend to like things done right and Herbie was no exception.   If you look at the picture you will see that much of the boat is very clean and almost like new.   During the last few months Herbie had replaced the engine with a Universal diesel with only a couple of hundred hours on it.   While he had the engine out, he rewired much of the battery to engine wires.   When he started the engine, it purred and I could tell there was pride in his work.  He had also hauled the boat, cleaned and repaired the bottom and then had given it several coats of Micron 66 paint.   The last time he had painted the boat, the paint lasted over eight years.  Just recently he had the bottom cleaned by a diver and the diver told him the bottom was like new.    Herbie had also replaced the zincs and added a new folding propeller.   When I got to the boat, I noticed  two new solar panels that were mounted on the aft of the boat.  He had mounted these so that they could be adjusted so as to get the full benefit of the sun.   These keep the batteries charged and run all of the lights and electronics on the boat.  He had also not advertised the Raymarine self-steering that was part of the boat and was mounted below deck.   This is the best place for it out of the weather.   I asked about an inflatable and he stated, "Oh yes, that would be included also."  It also has a dodger to keep the spray and some of the wind off of you when sailing and the list goes on and on.

The boat was very similar (only larger) than my last boat which was and Ericson 29.   While the boat is only a 32 footer, they are a proven seaworthy boat.   Another Ericson 32 that I was going to look at had just sailed back from Hawaii.   I will have a slip in Long Beach and my friend Mike from my astronomy club also has a boat there.    My friend Mike has already volunteered to help me sail the boat from Oxnard to Long Beach (approx 100 miles).   As you can tell, I am excited.   Mary is less excited (she gets sea sick) but I love her so much for hanging in there with this new adventure.

As the owner, Herbie, and I shook hands, I could tell he was a bit sad.   He had told me earlier that he had another boat already picked out.   I have a feeling that Herbie and I will stay in touch and grow into friends.  Thanks Herbie.
